Shogi pieces by Fugetsu Satsuma-hon-tsuge (real Satsuma boxwood) Kujaku-moku (Peacock pattern wood grain) Minase-sho (Minase script) mori-age (embossed) Shogi pieces.
Komashi (Shogi piece craftsman) 'Fugetsu' is a craftsman who has studied under Modern Master Craftsman Ito Kyutoku from Tendo City, Yamagata Prefecture, and is regarded as one of the top 5 modern masters. With the delicate and flowing 'Fugetsu work - Minase script' inscription on the bottom of the Osho (King piece) and the fluffy and elegant embossing, you can see the true craftsmanship from these splendid pieces. Pieces by Fugetsu are even used in Title Matches and Grand Champion Matches among others.
'Minase-sho' is a script invented by Mr. Minase Kanenari, a well-known Noh writer, featuring serenely styled relatively large characters. It is also said to have been favored by those with power during the Edo Period, such as Tokugawa Ieyasu, and is an extremely popular script.
'Mori-age-koma' is a piece made by filling the engraved characters with lacquer, and after drying and polishing the surface flat, finishing by using a brush to add more lacquer on top of the engraved lacquer parts to give slightly raised characters.
Ranked equally with the finest quality wood grain of 'Mikurajima-hon-tsuge', 'Satsuma-hon-tsuge', with its hard and tenacious wood, is also referred to as 'Practicality is Satsuma-hon-tsuge'.
'Kujaku-moku' is a beautiful pattern of the wood grain spreading out from the bottom towards the top part of the piece like 'a peacock with its wings spread', giving it its strong point. Since Kujaku-moku only appears at the part of the tree where it branches out, only enough wood for a few pieces can be taken from one tree. Therefore, in order to complete a set of Kujaku-moku pieces, multiple boxwood materials with similar wood coloring are required.
