This board was actually used in the 5th game of the 30th Hon-inbo title match between Mr. Yoshio ISHIDA 9-dan and Mr. Eio SAKATA 9-dan. The match was held in 1975 in Shinsho-ji Temple, Narita City, Chiba Prefecture Japan. At the bottom of the board, there are calligraphy writings showing Yoshio ISHIDA’s professional name ‘Hon-inbo SHUHO’ and his signature ‘KOURIN’.
This Tenmasa board with legs (6-sun: 18 cm thick) is made from 700-year-old Hyuga Kaya wood grown in Miyazaki Pref. Japan. This board is a true gem in terms of quality, nice feeling when placing a stone, wood texture, and color tone that is specific to Miyazaki wood. The top surface has perfect straight grain patters, as if it was drawn using a ruler. The grain patterns are very elaborate and entirely even between each ring. Furthermore, this board was actually used in the famous Go title match (5th game), that fact added special value. The value of this board is not only in the quality and the rarity of material, but also its historical background.

・About the 5th game of the 30th Hon-inbo title match
The 30th Hon-inbo title match drew a lot of attention because people’s interest were if Sakata would be able to regain the title from Ishida, who held the title for last 4 consecutive years. Sakata won the 1st through 3rd games, so everyone thought Sakata would catch a momentum and surely regain the title. However, in the 5th game, Sakata made a small mistake just before the game ended, which was a big loss for him. Eventually, Sakata could not regain the title after winning the first 3 games and lost the last 4 games. This board is a witness of history that was actually used in the 5th game, that was a turning point for both players who aimed to get this very important title. The match between Sakata and Ishida is handed down as a famous match in the modern Go history.

Mr. Yoshio ISHIDA, 9 dan: first became a holder of Hon-inbo Title in 1971 at the age of 22, the youngest record in Japan at that time, then he changed his professional Go player’s name to SHUHO. He became the 24th Hon-inbo after winning his 5th consecutive titles. Ishida was given the nickname "The Computer" because his play and counting skills were far more accurate than other pros. He got 24 titles in total.

Mr. Eio SAKATA, 9 dan: Sakata changed his professional Go player’s name to Hon-inbo EIJU after winning his 7th consecutive titles in Hon-inbo matches. He was later called the 23rd Hon-inbo. He was regarded as the strongest professional Go players in Showa Era (1926-1989). He had a number of records in Japan, such as winning total 64 titles in various matches, first Meijin record, and 7 consecutive titles in Hon-inbo matches as well. On the 29th of April 1990, he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold and Silver Star.
